Melissa Roxas Press Conference on Abduction

The Arroyo presidency in the Philippines has overseen several hundred kidnapping, disappearances, torture, murder, and rape of activists, students, scholars, and educators in the name of the military which is funded by US dollars.

The anarchist-news-dot-org responses show a serious lack of understanding of race and resistance building.

It surprises me that an almost exclusively White political thread such as contemporary US anarchy can just demand and insist that fighting White privilege is tired, unimportant, and diversionary and still take itself seriously. It is blatantly exercising said privilege and showing resistance to losing said privilege. I doubt many, if any, radicals/anarchists of color would take this White "post-left" anarchist position seriously at all.

Street Sweeper Social Club is Tom Morello and Boots Riley. Who the other musicians are is apparently unimportant (although their studio drummer played with Corrosion of Conformity in 2005).

I don’t know what I wanted from SSSC. Basically this sounds like RATM-lite with Boots on vocals and I don’t know if anyone shoulda expected much different. Sounding like RATM isn’t the worst thing. The worst thing is when this album veers into RHCP “True Men Don’t Kill Coyotes” territory. I kept having visions of the early 90’s funk revival. Yikes.

Why is Tom Morello holding back? There are no nutso “Battle of Los Angeles” guitar tricks. He really needs to either go all out crazy RATM Morello or do something less rhythmic and more traditional (like the acoustic-esque part of “Good Morning Mr. Smith”). Musically, I would have liked a less rap-rock style more in general.

However, I can’t bring myself to hate on SSSC that much. Boots saves most songs with sharp radical lyrics that listeners of The Coup are familiar with. Some songs have strong backing vocals and more of that would have tied things together sonically. I can easily listen to this over and over to dig deeper into the lyrics and feel that ‘right on’ revolutionary inspiration.

If SSSC continues as a real project, I could easily see the music getting better; getting less cliché and feeling more organic. This band already has rotation on MTV and is a great platform for the deserving lyrics of Boots Riley.

Because I was alive, aware, and turning on to pop culture in the early 80's. Because I remember how amazing Thriller was. Because he got MTV to play music made by Black people. Because I gave my fourth grade girlfriend a Michael Jackson doll for Christmas in 1984. Because I still get down when The Jackson 5 comes on at the club. Because I believe his fucked up head is the result of fame and an abusive childhood. Because he explained what vitiligo was to Oprah and I watched and figured out that is what I have.

Damn, he was a weirdo! Now I can’t wait to see what happens to his kids and just how fucked up they are from living in a bubble covered in drapery wearing Mardi Gras masks!

I am far from a patriot and I don't like cheering for USA. However, a lot of players I like and would like to see perform well are on the US squad (Altidore, Bradley, Onyewu, and my man Dempsey!).
I initially wanted to see Egypt take this year's Confederations Cup and it looked like the US was going to fall out just as everyone expected. Neither of those things happened.

I got more excited watching today's USA v. Spain match than I have watching any match in recent history. I was watching, with no audio, at my desk at work. I nearly jumped out of my seat when Dempsey scored that 2nd goal! By the 75th minute, I had a huge grin and could barely sit still.

The not-so-impressive-most-of-the-time USA beat Spain, the #1 ranked team. This ended Spain's 25 game unbeaten streak and propelled USA to the final (probably against Brazil).

Iran: Not A Revolution

First off, To You, The New Iran 'Expert'.

I have consciously not blogged on the topic of the protests in Iran. Why? Because too much "information" is hearsay and unverifiable. Because it truly is not a radical or revolutionary movement or rebellion. Because with all the noise being made, not much has clarified what the Iranian masses desire.

I salute the protestors and streetfighters in Iran. They believe that change is possible, that protest is not futile.
There is a major difference to 1979 revolution. Today, the opposition to Ahmadinejad is fighting the establishment with the establishment.
When some commentators say that what we are witnessing is a revolution they are at best naive and at worst following their own destructive agenda. The dispute is about the future path of the Islamic Republic and the meaning of the revolution -- not about overthrowing the whole system.

Ahmadinejad and Mousavi differ little. Ahmadinejad offers a slower privatization and, at least, lip service to helping the poor. Mousavi offers a faster neo-liberal privatization and, at least, lip service to more social freedoms. So do you want a European-style welfare state or American " freedom" of The Jonas Brothers and Yankee blue jeans? It surely isn't that simplistic but those two poles represent very different ideas of freedom and security at odds in Iran.

Let the Iranian people solve their conflict.

Good-Bye Big Long's???

One of the better things about living in North Oakland is that so much is within walking distance 24 hrs a day... And a large part of that benefit is the "super" Long's on Pleasant Valley. That place amazes everyone who goes there. It is gigantic and has everything.

Now, super Long's is getting ready to leave us. Long's has been sold to CVS and CVS does not plan to carry so many items or keep a storefront this large.
HORRIBLE!

So, what are the plans? Safeway is going to expand. They plan to expand the already more-than-sufficient parking in the shopping center. There is also plan to bring in a bunch of smaller retail shops in that popular "cottage" shop look.
(WTF is up with that cottage shop look?!?!?! It is already too pervasive and is going to look so dated in 15 yrs!)

We, the community, need to ensure that if super Long's/CVS doesn't want to stay (in its current size/scope), adequate smaller shops pick up the slack (24 hrs? Probably not :( ).

... I can't believe the audacity of such a headline!

Avigdor Lieberman, the Israeli foreign minister, has said his country is ready for talks with the Palestinians with no pre-conditions and denied that settlements were an obstacle to peace.
Of course, those illegal settlements are part of a campaign of displacement or ethnic cleansing and thus, are an obstacle to peace.

On Monday, newspaper headlines across the United States announced that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had endorsed the creation of a Palestinian state, and the White House welcomed the speech as "an important step forward."
Look up the word "state" in the dictionary. You'll probably see references to territorial integrity, power and sovereignty. The entity that Netanyahu was talking about on Sunday would lack all of those constitutive features. A "state" without a defined territory that is not allowed to control its own borders or airspace and cannot enter into treaties with other states is not a state, any more than an apple is an orange or a car an airplane.
"We" are a people, Netanyahu was saying; "they" are merely a "population." "We" have a right to a state -- a real state. "They" do not.

So, Israel has stated the preconditions for "peace" and they are the complete subjugation of Palestine... and that is really not "peace" at all.

Want More On Iran?

Long-standing Middle East correspondent, Robert Fisk, is defying the government crackdown on foreign media reporting in Iran.

It's clearly an Islamic protest against specifically the personality, the manner, the language of Ahmadinejad. They absolutely despise him but they do not hate or dislike the Islamic republic that they live in.

There were about 10,000 Mousavi men and women on the streets, with approximately 500 Iranian special forces, trying to keep them apart.

It was interesting that the special forces - who normally take the side of Ahmadinejad's Basij militia - were there with clubs and sticks in their camouflage trousers and their purity white shirts and on this occasion the Iranian military kept them away from Mousavi's men and women.

It was quite extraordinary because it looked as if the military authorities in Tehran have either taken a decision not to go on supporting the very brutal militia - which is always associated with the presidency here - or individual soldiers have made up their own mind that they're tired of being associated with the kind of brutality that left seven dead yesterday

My suspicion is that [Ahmadinejad] might have actually won the election but more like 52 or 53 per cent. It's possible that Mousavi got closer to 38 per cent.

Iran had a vote and now there is some level of unrest due to the purported outcome.

I just can't buy the US corporate media coverage of the protests. Just the fact that the US media outlets are devoting such heavy and detailed coverage is worth noting. No such coverage is given to equally bloody protests against governments friendly to the US. The US government is now working WITH Twitter to ensure flow of information to the US... Remember when the US military reported that Twitter could possibly be used for just these purposes but it was called aiding terrorism?

The USA has had a policy of destabilizing the Iranian government for well over 30 years!

With all that said, people are putting their lives on the line to protest en masse against their government. I can't say I know their demands aside from a rejection of or a recounting of the election results.

Soft Focus

I think Ian Svenonius has 'played' a character for so long that there is no distinguishing from his character and whoever he is or once was. I think most of what he does/has done is genius.

Unbeknownst to me, Svenonius had an interview program on VBS.TV called Soft Focus. It is an interesting series.

In particular I recommend Ian Mackaye's appearance. Some real gems are dropped.

What's been happening on the rightwing since President Obama's inauguration?

Right-wing extremism is being systematically fed by the conservative media and political establishment.
It must be met with resistance but more importantly, we need to organize our communities against any such encroachment.

When conservative rightwing groups set up shop, there is a correlated rise in "extremist" rightwing/racist violence.
The Liberal attitude that everyone, no matter how intolerable or dangerous, deserves a voice is cowardice and naive.

Glenn Beck argued that the Nazi Party was "leftwing"; that "political correctness" led the committed white supremacist, James Von Brunn, to shoot a security guard at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC; and that ultimately President Barack Obama is the one responsible for the violence because his "Socialistic" policies are engendering widespread anger.
I wonder if Bush would have been to blame for any radical 'violence' done under his terms. Those who claim protest was immoral, wrong, and should be fought and discouraged now claim that violent insurrection is valid means of political action... but only in one direction.

They won't be the only force on the rise.
The ungovernable force is rising.

SJ Pigs Using Intimidation Tactics

Officers of the San Jose police union answered critics in the community on two Internet sites. The intent appeared to be to unnerve those who question police conduct and department policy. The pigs mocked and exaggerated the testimony of Raj Jayadev at a council hearing. Jayadev is the founder of Silicon Valley De-Bug, an organization providing a voice for young people of color.

Police George Beattie was especially hostile. Referring to a "street agitator representing an anti-police group," he wrote, "I believe now is the time for Mayor Reed and the Council to decide just exactly whose side they are on. Are they on the side of us, the protectors of the weak and vulnerable? Or are they on the side of the thugs, who attempt to get their way by threatening anyone who opposes them with physical violence."

Ha! Ya, right. We all know who the intimidating thugs are.

Tales from Inside the U.S. Gitmo

Daniel McGowan is an environmental and social justice activist from NYC charged in federal court on counts of arson and conspiracy and given the "terrorism enhancement" for his involvement in two environmentally motivated actions in Oregon in 2001. He is currently serving a 7 year sentence in the Communication Management Unit at USP Marion in Illinois with very limited access to seeing and talking to friends and family. The Department of Justice and FBI have labeled Daniel and his co-defendants among the "number 1 domestic terrorism threat."

Here are Daniel's words from inside the belly of the beast:
Many of the men here (both Muslim and non) are considered political prisoners in their respective movements and have been engaged in social justice, religious organizations, charities and humanitarian efforts. Another conception of the CMU is that it is a location designed to isolate us from our movements and to act as a deterrent for others from those movements (as in “step outside the line and you too will end up there”). The intended effect of long-term housing of this kind is a profound sense of dislocation and alienation. With your mail, email, phones, and visits monitored and no human touch allowed at the visits, it is difficult to feel a connection to “the streets.” There is historical evidence of the BoP utilizing political prisons — despite the fact that the Department of Justice refuses to acknowledge the concept of political prisoners in US prisons, choosing to call us “criminal” instead.

Colbert Report + Iraq = Not Funny

This past week, The Colbert Report has been broadcasting from Iraq in front of US soldiers in conjunction with the USO.
It has not been funny.

Colbert's whole schtick is satire. I suppose it is difficult to satirize a war in front of the people fighting it when you are there to entertain them. However, this is The Report's real failure because Colbert doesn't have to take on the US military or even the war as much as he should be taking on the likes of Rush Limbaugh. Colbert's character is a satire of people like Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, and Rush Limbaugh. He doesn't need to poke fun at the military so long as he pokes fun at the real life jokes he imitates. So, Steven Colbert should have studied and parodied any USO show from a warzone the afore mentioned clowns have done... But I am not sure any of them have done a show from Iraq (which Colbert could have also capitalized on).

In the end, it all just sounded like the USO wrote his jokes and he was an unfunny military ass-kisser.
The Daily Show would have worked better in Iraq because TDS's liberalism wouldn't preclude it from being funny while still drooling over the military.

Big Ups Pitch Invasion

I follow a blog called Pitch Invasion. As you might have guessed, it is about football (aka soccer). More specifically, it is about "exploring football culture around the globe." I had never given much thought to the blog's politics (but I have not been offended, so that must say something to begin with).

Recently, Pitch Invasion's Jennifer Doyle posted a great account of police in the area of the infamous 1990s Ramparts Scandal as well as the neighborhood of the May Day “Melee” joining a football league. I encourage you to read the article and check Pitch Invasion out.

Apparently, aside from porn, the internet was made for photos of cute animals. It helps that the animals are tiny and extra neotanized. I really have no interest in the cuteness memes.

Then came this blog, Mouchois. It documents a teacup cat named Melvin. What makes this blog special is that it documents all the health problems little Melvin has as a result of fucked up designer breeding. The blog explains why this consumer obsession with the "cuteness" of animals viewed as products is an awful thing.

The government has systematically labeled animal rights and environmental activists who have never harmed anyone as “the number one domestic terrorism threat.” Yet the term is not applied to individuals who have committed much more serious (and often violent) crimes either for personal gain or for right-wing motives.

Here are 30 cases that the government has chosen to not label as “terrorism”:

-Plotting to assassinate the president.
-Beating African-American voters because they voted for Obama.
-Threatening to assassinate the President and detonate C4 at the Mall of America.
-Making death threats against biologists to “kill the enemies of Christian society.”
-Attacking a black man with a chainsaw because of his race.
-Using a noose to assault a black man at the Pentagon.
-Tying up a black student and taunting him with racial epithets as part of a high school graduation party.

-Leaving an incendiary device at a federal courthouse.

-Sending white powder to John McCain’s presidential campaign with a note reading, “Senator McCain, If you are reading this then you are already DEAD! Unless of course you can’t or don’t breathe.”
-Mailing 65 threatening letters to financial institutions with white powder.
-Mailing the Social Security Administration and saying ““I’m going to blow up your office and the IRS office as well.”
-Sending more than 25 threatening letters to federal, state, and local governmental agencies containing fake Anthrax.
-Sending a white powder through the U.S. mail to the Internal Revenue Service with a note that says “YOU HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO ANTRAX DIE!”
-A former sheriff’s deputy forcing a teenage girl to perform sexual acts in his patrol car.
-Three police officers shooting a 92-year old woman at her home “during the execution of a search warrant obtained by the defendants based upon false information.”
-Using “deadly weapons including firearms, baseball bats, machetes, bottles or knives in the commission of numerous murders, attempted murders and assaults…kidnapping; obstruction of justice; and witness tampering.”
-Stealing cattle for personal profit.
-Setting fire at a petting barn and killing more than 40 animals.
-Setting dozens of fires that caused “incalculable suffering.”

Non-Reunion: Born Against

My aim is to soon write some thoughts I have come to regarding the rash of hardcore/punk reunion shows over the past couple years. In the meantime...

Near the top of my list of bands I would die to see live again is Born Against. Born Against also top the list of bands that should NEVER reunite.
I would love to go nuts with all the old folks to "Nine Years" but it would be oh-so-pitiful to see insane Sam McPheeters and crew do any sort of reunion that wasn't a total farce.

With all that said, apparently, I am not the only one who would like to see Born Against one more time. Sam McPheeters revealed on his blog that LiskFest approached Born Against about a reunion show (without offering any apparent payment). To give you some perspective, acts at the last last LiskFest included Set Your Goals, H2O, Bleeding Through, Gorilla Biscuits, and I think Cro Mags Jam showed up.

This isn't the first offer either. Born Against were offered flights and hotels to play a CBGB's farewell show in 2006.

Well, kudos Born Against. PLEASE STAY DEAD!

As a result, us on the Left sometimes tend to react against our state's interests and cut China slack. However, many protestors in Tiananmen Square were not seeking Yankee blue jeans. They were fighting for a radical new world.

One of the perverse features of modern politics is the attempt of western capitalists to present themselves as defenders of democracy and people’s rights, and their portrayal of revolutionary communists as dictators and oppressors. They have attempted to impose this narrative on the public view of the 1989 events — when, in fact, the very opposite is true…. when in fact the U.S. then supported the brutal government of Deng in every way that mattered. The U.S. claimed the rebellion, while they came waving dollars to exploit China’s people.

Without a true peoples army, the people had nothing — despite the justice of their demands, despite the passion of their voices and the power of their numbers.

It is right to rebel against reactionaries!

Sacto DJ's Advocate Violence Against Transgender Children

On May 28th, Sacramento's KRXQ morning DJ's,Rob Williams and Arnie States, devoted the segment in question to a diatribe against transgender children.

Williams and States took turns referring to gender dysphoric children as "idiots" and "freaks," who were just out "for attention" and had "a mental disorder that just needs to somehow be gotten out of them," either by verbal abuse on the part of the parents, or even shock therapy.
"Allowing transgenders to exist, pretty soon it becomes normal to fall in love with the animals," they said.

States bragged that if his own son were to ever dare put on a pair of high heels, States would beat his son with one of his own shoes. He urged parents whose own little boys expressed a desire to wear a dress to verbally abuse and degrade them, "I look forward to when [the transgender children] go out into society and society beats them down."
"I have every right to call you a freak and judge you on that. It makes me sick. 'Mommy, I'm a girl trapped in a boy's body,'" he simpered, mimicking an effeminate little boy. "I want to wear a dwess."

States and Williams urged advocates of transgender children to "stop hiding behind research and laws."

Justice for Melissa Roxas

Melissa Roxas was abducted and tortured by suspected elements of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
Roxas described being abducted by approximately 15 armed men, thrown in a van, handcuffed and blindfolded for six days, and dragged from jail cell to jail cell. She recounts being subjected to torture via asphyxiation using a doubled-up plastic bag, repeated beatings to the face and body, and having her head banged repeatedly against the wall by her interrogators. Roxas said that one interrogator stated those who tortured her were from the Special Operations Group (SOG), and she heard one of her interrogators addressed as “Sir.” She also heard gunfire from what she believed to be a firing range as well as the sounds of aircraft, pointing to the high probability that she was held in a military camp. She was denied legal counsel despite her persistent requests and forced to say that she was a member of the New People’s Army.
Roxas was dropped off near her relative’s house around 6:30 AM on May 25. Her captors left her with a SIM card and phone, which one of her interrogators used to contact her after she was released.

Melissa was released because she is an American but Juanito Carabeo and John Edward Handoc remain missing.

So here’s the deal: all of us in Shook Ones and at Paper + Plastick believe one thing: gay marriage should exist. The discussion of same sex marriage rights is not the brainchild of some “gay agenda.” In fact, it is an issue that exists independent of the context in which it finds itself. The issue is Civil Rights and putting an end to the “separate but equal” ideas that should have died with the civil rights advances of the 60’s.

So here’s what we are doing: We are making an exclusive song available for digital download right now. The song is called “Breakfast for Dinner”, the cost is $1 and all of the proceeds (all of them) are going to be donated to the groups who are fighting on behalf of same sex couples in California (Lambda legal, ACLU of California, and Equality California)
The song is a sort of follow up to “order form” and deals with the passage of Proposition 8. More specifically, it deals with how many minority groups in California voted in much higher percentages to support the proposition, and how I was completely disappointed that these minorities who supported it were failing to draw comparisons between this bill and the struggles of minorities in this country.
