Portraits Of Past reunion!

In the 1990's before the term "screamo" was coined and before "emo" took on the awful connotations it has today, the enclave of Half Moon Bay brought the world of punk Portraits Of Past.

Portraits Of Past were massively influential over the past decade's bands that play fast music with high pitched emotional screams. POP sorta morphed into Vue and its members went on to play in Funeral Diner and Bellavista. Their discography is coming soon via Ebullition.
And now they announce their reunion!

The band consisting of Rex, Rob, Matthew, Jeremy, and Jonah have already met up and confirmed they plan to play 4 shows in late summer. One at 924 Gilman St. in Berkeley, one at Bottom Of The Hill in SF, one in NYC, and another somewhere in the Midwest.

Portraits Of Past consist of some seriously nice and genuine dudes and I am excited to see how all this turns out.

hmmm. I seem to remember other members that continually get erased from the band's history. Thanks again all you "seriously nice and genuine dudes".

Yeah the original bass player was kicked out shady style, and the drummer quit when he couldn't put up with them anymore. They were both in other bands as well after PoP, but I guess they don't officially exist. This is lame.No sympathy for cash-ins.

Aaron Bigpants! Where are you? Here is the real question. If your 1992 emo band reunites in 2008, do you wear big pants or skinny pants? I'll take my answer here V

Oh it's me again. The one with the pants question. I just wanted to respond to what Cash in Kids said about this band making money. Are you fuckin kidding me, idiot. Do you think any of us who were in bands like this in the 90's made ANY money. No, we did not make ANY money. Maybe Kent Mclard made money. But not the people who made 7"'s and toured the US in the worst 85 Econolines we could afford did not make money. Get a clue. The $200 they'll probably make at Gilman will surely be spent on $4 a gallon gas. do the math.

interesting...

It is very interesting that the attention this entry seemingly drew has been negative (not as surprising that people didn't sign names).

I know I have spoken ill of punk bands reuniting on this blog. I did kinda change my tune after seeing Lifetime. However, there is a world of difference between the likes of Gorilla Biscuits and POP.

I was not in POP and actually was only mildly a fan of their music during their (very short) heyday. So, I won't assume to speak for them. I just find it VERY odd that comments are addressing former members. I will forego any long story, but:

1) Most of POP's run was with the same line-up.
2) Anyone that knowledgeable of POP's original members probably knew the band fairly intimately during their initial stages out of Fairfield. I, then, probably know you too.
So, What's the beef? I don't think the member changes were atypical or shady.

If it matters- I know POP are not reuniting for $. If anything, I think this decision was made by a group of friends that rarely see each other anymore. I ain't gonna promote nostalgia but I will promote some friends playing music again.

fucking christ... i wish tehama was still going, i was trying to get these kids to do this two, three years ago. this makes me very happy. it would be awesome for this to be an old time HMB reunion, as well (what do you say, let's put all the bullshit over the past 10 years behind us and get together again for something we've been waiting for forever).

hey, great blog! this is great news!

I was a fan of POP back in the Bleed split days. Their LP was one of the more influential and one that i still listen to. Matthews new band, ....Who Calls So Loud is very good. I am looking forward to their release.

I am not sure why people are getting heated over any of this stuff. I am just going to assume you are either A) Young B) Confused C) Stupid. D) All of the above?

Everyone just chill. POP is a good thing. This should only bring cheer from those who know of them and interest from those who dont.

dudes,

don't be silly. portraits of past ruled. don't hate on this band just because a bunch of other shitty old dudes are doing reunion tours with half the original members to make some coin.

go to the show, see a band from the bay area that made a pretty radical shift from what was going on, and have a good time knowing that they don't hate music they made a long time ago.

we were generally all self-loathing white kids from the suburbs anyway...i was stoked then to get a respite from pretending i could identify with powerhouse...and stoked now to have a reason to go back to gilman!

bang yer head! dig it!

i don't think being in the band for a month and not being on any of the records qualifies you as an "ex-member", "anonymous". you were kicked out of the band over 15 years ago. get over it, man.
