Cops from Oakland To Athens
Today at Fruitvale BART.
3pm to 7pm (or 8pm depending on where I got my info)
Memorial for Oscar Grant and demonstration against the killer police.
_____
Maybe we should ask ourselves why Athens exploded in response to (but not solely because of)the cops killing Alexis Grigoropoulos. Maybe we should ask what the correct and best response should be to cops killing Oscar Grant in our own city.
As Devon Hoff said:
"Do we value the lives and well being of Palestinians and Greeks and Oaxacans and adventurous middle-class white radicals more than those of working people we see every day in our own neighborhoods?
It has been five days and counting since Oscar was killed. What have we—supposed radicals and would-be revolutionaries—actually done?
Perhaps a better question is, how should we combat police violence in our own communities?"
Tonight can be a start!
(And I don't necessarily mean a start to rioting. I mean a beginning of building towards something substantial.)
_____
In closing, I want to share something that my mother wrote to me:
"I think it is great that you are going to support the poor guy who was killed, but I wanted to warn you (as a mother) to be careful. After all, the whole incident shows how far the police will go, even when unprovoked."
Amen.
